{"id":335,"date":"2012-05-18T16:03:44","date_gmt":"2012-05-18T21:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cgayling.com\/malmaxa\/?p=335"},"modified":"2012-05-18T16:03:44","modified_gmt":"2012-05-18T21:03:44","slug":"logic-vs-medicine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cgayling.com\/malmaxa\/general\/logic-vs-medicine\/","title":{"rendered":"Logic vs Medicine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During a conversation with my wife, the topic of routine screening mammograms as a means of prevention of breast cancer came up.\u00a0 I am a logical person and not at all averse to defying conventional wisdom when it flies in the face of logic.\u00a0 For me logic wins every time, there is simply no contest.<\/p>\n<p>Back to the topic of this post.\u00a0 In the USA <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.org\/\">The America Cancer Society <\/a>recommends \u201c<em>Yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40 and continuing for as long as a woman is in good health<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0 Various other people, much more learned than I, disagree with this timeline.\u00a0 This includes USA based organizations like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org\/\">The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force<\/a> \u2013 though mammograms are generally recommended, their frequency is generally reduced from once a year to once every two to three years.<\/p>\n<p>Conventional wisdom would seem to indicate that if mammograms detect cancer then get them done often, since early detection is key to defeating cancer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Logic calls foul<\/strong>.\u00a0 First, let us look at what a screening mammogram actually is.\u00a0 Simply put, the breast is crushed between two plates until it is flat and dense, then it is irradiated by X-Rays. \u00a0This is done twice for each breast, with X-Ray pictures taken in the vertical and horizontal planes.<\/p>\n<p>Sounds wonderful doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \u00a0To me it sounds like detection is not only barbaric, but downright dangerous as well.\u00a0 I wonder what happens to a benign tumor when it is crushed, then irradiated twice every year?\u00a0 I can\u2019t imagine it is anything good.<\/p>\n<p>Although this primitive technology is capable of detecting breast cancer early, perhaps it is also capable of causing breast cancer by its invasive nature \u2013 logic certainly seems to warn of this danger.\u00a0 (While \u201c<em>invasive<\/em>\u201d might not be the precisely correct word, X-Rays do penetrate the body.)<\/p>\n<p>Am I recommending that women don\u2019t get annual mammograms?\u00a0 Absolutely not.\u00a0 I am not a doctor so I am making no recommendation either way.<\/p>\n<p>What I am recommending is you take conventional wisdom with a grain of salt.\u00a0 If it seems to defy logic, it is probably worthy of\u00a0deeper investigation.\u00a0 If the conventional wisdom originates from people who will benefit financially from your listening to them (namely\u00a0a doctor or radiologist),\u00a0then perhaps you need to take a pinch of salt, and throw it over your left shoulder \u2013 right into their eye.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During a conversation with my wife, the topic of routine screening mammograms as a means of prevention of breast cancer came up.\u00a0 I am a logical person and not at all averse to defying conventional wisdom when it flies in the face of logic.\u00a0 For me logic wins every time, there is simply no contest.
