{"id":422,"date":"2012-07-04T14:10:01","date_gmt":"2012-07-04T19:10:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cgayling.com\/malmaxa\/?p=422"},"modified":"2012-07-04T14:10:01","modified_gmt":"2012-07-04T19:10:01","slug":"vengeance-cost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cgayling.com\/malmaxa\/general\/vengeance-cost\/","title":{"rendered":"Vengeance Cost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s forget our political woes for the moment, and get down to the important stuff \u2013 where am I with the third novel in Malmaxa?\u00a0 Namely, <strong><em>Vengeance Cost<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Well, I could lie, and say <em>Vengeance Cost<\/em> is going great.\u00a0 Or, I could lie and say I\u2019m struggling.\u00a0 Though it goes against everything I am as a man, I won\u2019t lie (but I console myself in this by keeping my lips firmly pressed together as I type \u2013 they aren&#8217;t moving, therefore I&#8217;m not lying&#8230;).\u00a0 <em>Vengeance Cost<\/em> is going \u2026 OK.<\/p>\n<p>I have already defined the main threads, and even written the first 44 pages of the story.\u00a0 So, I just lied \u2013 Malmaxa really writes itself \u2013 there, I feel better already :).\u00a0 Don\u2019t hold your breath though, there is a massive amount of work to be done before <em>Vengeance Cost<\/em> approaches readiness for release.\u00a0 That said, things are definitely getting faster.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smashwords.com\/books\/view\/88930\" target=\"_blank\">Beltamar\u2019s War <\/a>took me about two years (after literally a lifetime of dreaming about it), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smashwords.com\/books\/view\/171009\" target=\"_blank\">The Pilgrimage<\/a> took just over a year, so perhaps <em>Vengeance Cost<\/em> will be out in less than a year?\u00a0 I don\u2019t think so, though hope springs eternal.<\/p>\n<p>One of the things I\u2019m doing as I work on <em>Vengeance Cost<\/em> is re-reading both <em>Beltamar&#8217;s War<\/em> and\u00a0<em>The Pilgrimage<\/em> to ensure continuity.\u00a0 A side effect of that is that I will be releasing a revised edition of <em>The Pilgrimage<\/em> \u2013 I know this is hard to believe, but I\u2019ve actually found several sentences that are currently beneath my \u00a0already low standards.\u00a0 The paperback version of <em>The Pilgrimage\u00a0<\/em>will be released with that revision.<\/p>\n<p>In case you\u2019re wondering, the title of the third novel in Malmaxa\u00a0was set to be \u201c<strong><em>The Un-Matched Prophet<\/em><\/strong>\u201d.\u00a0 As with many things Malmaxa, that changed on a fateful impulse.\u00a0 Though I won\u2019t say what that impulse was, for fear of spoiling things for my readers, I will say this:-<\/p>\n<p>I find that much beloved, and often visited,\u00a0perception, \u201c<em>Sometimes you must do the wrong thing, for the right reason<\/em>\u201d, to be fatally flawed.\u00a0 <strong>Wrong, is wrong<\/strong>.\u00a0 Though the perpetrator of wrong might eventually find their way to right, there is invariably a better path to justice than the one that leads through wrong.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/cgayling\">Evil\u2019s taint becomes increasingly tolerable, with each exposure\u2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Still, the reasons that good people do bad things are compelling.\u00a0 Poor behavior is almost endlessly fascinating.\u00a0 Since Malmaxa is a thinly veiled look at real life, not even its best characters are exempt from poor choices and disastrous decisions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Does vengeance have a cost?<\/strong>\u00a0 Indeed, it does and in Malmaxa, multiple paths lead toward vengeance.\u00a0 The question must therefore be \u2013 <em>To which thread in my written tapestry does the title refer, and\u00a0what price will the capricious Gods levy for its satisfaction?<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let&#8217;s forget our political woes for the moment, and get down to the important stuff \u2013 where am I with the third novel in Malmaxa?\u00a0 Namely, Vengeance Cost.
