Those <em>followers<\/em> are just spam-bots, not real people?\u00a0 Well, if I\u2019d known that before\u2026 (I might have destroyed my credibility even faster than I am on my own\u2026)<\/p>\n<p>Enough rambling, already!\u00a0 This post details my thoughts, captured as I subjected myself to the cruel and unusual punishment of \u201c<em>finding followers<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0 Call me Stupid, (my wife often does, so you\u2019re in excellent company), but I figured out the best way to find people with whom I wish to interact (AKA, those who\u2019ll succumb to the imminent, impending\u00a0hard sell!) would be to seek them on Twitter.\u00a0 My limited capacity, model &#8217;60,\u00a0imagination could come up with no better strategy than reading their Twitter Biographies.<\/p>\n<p>How to begin, then?\u00a0 Well, I <strong>cheated<\/strong> (shhhhhh!, I don\u2019t want my wife to hear) \u2013 I selected a few interesting looking Tweeters, (avoiding the \u201cfamous\u201d like the plague), \u00a0clicked their links, hit their home profiles, and scanned their most recent tweets. \u00a0If they were tweeting things I found interesting, I noted their names.\u00a0 If they were spouting nonsense, (AKA constant advertisements hidden within compressed URLs), I moved on.\u00a0 Soon enough, a few hours, no more than a day, or two, (wait, what day is this again?), and I had my \u201c<strong>source<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re squeamish, stop reading now \u2013 for the depth of my wickedness is about to be revealed.\u00a0 <em><strong>Yes, it\u2019s true \u2013 it was me<\/strong><\/em>\u2026 I started stealing, pillaging, robbing, thieving, looting, and poaching their followers!\u00a0 The thrill of this was almost more than I could bear!\u00a0 Lists, that had taken them eons to build, I ransacked in seconds!\u00a0 Oh, the glorious subterfuge.\u00a0 Wait just one second here, I strive to be honest, (not because honesty is the best policy, which it is, but because I\u2019ll be caught if I diverge from truth&#8217;s path), did I say \u201c<strong>in seconds<\/strong>\u201d?\u00a0 If I did, which I\u2019m not admitting\u2026 well, then\u00a0consider that a slight exaggeration (slight, in political terms, means five trillion \u2013 therefore my exaggeration was slight, to the point of insignificance).\u00a0 So it took me about thirty hours, anyone counting?\u00a0 Certainly not me\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Let me tell you, reading twitter bio\u2019s for thirty hours is about as much fun as having an <strong><em>unpeeled pineapple rubbed in your face<\/em> <\/strong>(no wonder my eyes are burning &#8211; it&#8217;s got nothing to do with my inner demons, I swear).\u00a0 <strong><em>I can&#8217;t recommend it strongly enough!<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Do it, and find out for yourself.\u00a0 Not only will you soon learn exactly what type of people you\u2019re looking for, but you\u2019ll learn how to stifle that gag reflex when you read the truly terrible bio&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>And now, without further delay, here&#8217;s my list of <em><strong>do\u2019s and don\u2019ts for Twitter Biographies<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Since I\u2019m an acknowledged Negative, the list of don\u2019ts far exceeds the Positive (did that come out right, it hurts my mouth to form that word).\u00a0 For the like-minded, don\u2019t worry, I\u2019ll get to the bad stuff as fast as I can.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Turn-On\u2019s \u2013 if these factors are in your bio\u2026 Good job!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Re-Tweeters<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 Very compelling, but only if my message might be what your followers are looking for.\u00a0 Lets face it, if your niche is crushed pomegranate pips, well your followers really won&#8217;t be interested in my brand of snake oil, namely moral philosophy couched as\u00a0fantasy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ll listen<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 However,\u00a0I hope you\u2019ll also talk, then we\u2019ll have great conversations together.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A tantalizing hint<\/strong> of something I seek \u2013 and I\u2019m hooked.\u00a0 Likely, this will be something about you (no, no, no! well yes,\u00a036-24-36, is exactly what I didn&#8217;t mean).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Something I strongly identify with<\/strong> \u2013 Snag! \u00a0Works every time \u2013 individual results may vary\u2026\u00a0 And precisely how do you know what I identify with?\u00a0 You don\u2019t, so be honest and speak of yourself, and you\u2019ll attract the right kind of people for you (if you&#8217;re unlucky, I might be one of them).<\/p>\n<p><strong>A clever *original* play on words<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 I\u2019m a sucker for them, I\u2019ll almost always flick that blasted follow button \u2013 even if I have nothing in common with <em>@whoever<\/em>. Here\u2019s a perfect example, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ohsorissy\" target=\"_blank\">Marisa Michelle<\/a> and yes, I am following her.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bottom-line<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 Fill up those 160 characters with real words about who you think you are or would like to be, and what you\u2019ve seen on your journey so far. \u00a0In simple English, <strong><em>a tasty snippet of your soul is the soup we all crave<\/em><\/strong>. What could be easier?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Turn-off\u2019s \u2013 if these are in your bio, especially if they\u2019re at its start\u2026 well, I\u2019m probably not following you.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In vague order from most obnoxious, to most trivial.\u00a0 This is the good stuff, the bad stuff that is, for us negatives, keep your mitts off my half-full glass types&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Threats<\/strong> \u2013 threaten to unfollow me if I unfollow you\u2026 Who cares? \u00a0I promise it isn\u2019t me, and I guarantee I won\u2019t be clicking you to find out more.\u00a0 To me, your bio screams something like this\u00a0\u201c<strong><em>Complete loser, except to people interested only in large, meaningless numbers<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0 (five trillion, anyone?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boasts<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 Any shape or form, ranging from how wonderful you think you are, down to a list of \u201c<em>credentials<\/em>\u201d intended to make you seem important.\u00a0 I\u2019m not interested in what you claim to have done, rewards you claim to have received, or who you claim has endorsed you.\u00a0 (Notice the trendy word there?\u00a0 It was <em>claim<\/em>.) This is the internet \u2013 there are no laws here, and many liars (sneaks a quick glimpse at the mirror, nope, my honest face is still on).\u00a0 Simply because you say it on the Internet, doesn&#8217;t make it true.<\/p>\n<p><strong>L33t-5p3ak<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 Communication should be easy.\u00a0 Forcing me to mentally decode whatever clever message you\u2019re trying to convey\u2026 well, it\u2019s a smart way to make me skip you.\u00a0 Use it in your posts if you must, but avoid it in your bio \u2013 unless you want to keep potential listeners away.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Poor Grammar<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 Yes, I might be one of them \u2013\u00a0the many, many, who value the slightest hint of a fundamental understanding of rudimentary\u00a0grammar.\u00a0 In your Tweets you can type fast and ignore those pesky niceties.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t do it in your bio \u2013 first impressions do count.\u00a0 On Twitter your bio is your first impression, make the most of it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Claiming Copyright<\/strong> on your\u00a0Tweets \u2013\u00a0 If, indeed, you wrote them, their copyright is implicitly yours.\u00a0 Better yet, your tweets are recorded and timestamped for posterity by Twitter.\u00a0\u00a0Yes, people will steal them, corrupt them, and republish them as their own \u2013 there\u2019s little we can do about that sort of scumbag.\u00a0 You gain little by claiming copyright in your bio \u2013 anyone can read your Tweets without ever reading your bio, so to effectively assert copyright you&#8217;d have to preface every single Tweet with such an assertion. Good luck finding room for that in a 140 character Tweet, of course you could try using the copyright symbol \u00a9, I think that would be pretty annoying though.\u00a0 So, instead of gaining something,\u00a0you alienate me from reading your Tweets.\u00a0 Since I\u2019m here to converse, I won\u2019t waste my time engaging with someone who clearly doesn\u2019t want to speak with me \u2013\u00a0they only want to <strong>talk at me<\/strong>.\u00a0 Would you choose to remain in a conversation with a colleague who prefaced everything they said with, \u201c<strong><em>Don\u2019t repeat this without attributing it to me\u2026<\/em><\/strong>\u201d?\u00a0 Twitter, is about choice. \u00a0I choose no.\u00a0 By the way, before you copy and paste from this post, look up in the top right corner of this page, yep, that&#8217;s an assertion of copyright all right &#8211; but this is my blog, not a Twitter bio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An animated GIF as your avatar<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 Yes, you\u2019re very clever, making those little monstrosities is time consuming, and you really, really want to show off your amazing skills.\u00a0 Unfortunately, here\u2019s the downside\u2026 I\u2019m a primitive man, if your avatar blinks at me or moves \u2013 my first instinct is to kill it, and I do. {<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Update<\/span>, I just unfollowed a user whose posts had a blinking avatar.\u00a0 I liked their content, but the constant &#8220;<em>look at me, look at me<\/em>&#8221; demand of their avatar for attention broke this camel&#8217;s back.}<\/p>\n<p><strong>I Follow Back<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 Impressive, tempting, but un-combined with some gem about you \u2013 not compelling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nothing but a hyperlink<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 If you say nothing about yourself in your bio, why would I be tempted to click your link?\u00a0 It\u2019s not like I\u2019m paranoid enough, now you want me unwrapping \u201c<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">gifts<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d provocatively encased in blue? (hehe, that isn&#8217;t a link, but by all means keep on clicking it&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Superlatives<\/strong> in your description of self \u2013\u00a0 Blowing your own trumpet&#8230;\u00a0 Classy, very classy [not].<\/p>\n<p><strong>A blank bio<\/strong> \u2013 I\u2019m a skeptic by nature, this makes me think you&#8230; aren\u2019t.\u00a0 I know Twitter is full of bots, but I can\u2019t imagine a bot smart enough to write an effective bio \u2013 steal one, sure, but within no time it&#8217;ll be on every other bot bio.\u00a0 Therefore, what a blank bio tells me is that you\u2019re a bot.\u00a0 Move along, nothing to see there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A sales pitch<\/strong> \u2013 Whew, and I was just starting to worry about the dearth of advertising on the internet, yours is like a breath of fresh air.\u00a0 Tell me about yourself, not your product.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outrageous claims<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 Save them for your sales pitch posts, which will only come after I choose to follow you, which I won\u2019t be doing since I\u2019m pretty sure they will be disposable spam, which I don\u2019t want.\u00a0 Oh, and by the way, where&#8217;s the disclaimer?\u00a0 Shouldn\u2019t \u00a0advertising be honest, at least superficially?<\/p>\n<p><strong>We<\/strong> \u2013 I\u2019m interested in communicating with individuals \u2013 if there\u2019s more than one of you, then each of you should have your own account.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I am @unknown<\/strong> \u2013 Terrible way to introduce yourself, even in the \u201creal world\u201d.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to know your name, I want to know something about you, and how you might hold an interest for me.\u00a0 Names can come later, after we\u2019ve sized each other up.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The next points, well they&#8217;re about the pointless\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Where you live<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 This is the Virtual World\u2026 we\u2019re right here, together, in your browser \u2013\u00a0lean closer and you&#8217;ll hear me, look closer and you can read me. \u00a0What does place matter, unless you&#8217;re dropping names to impress me, in which case read the article again, paying special attention to the topic entitled &#8220;<strong><em>Boasts<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unnecessary greetings<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 As I zoom past your bio, I\u2019m thinking &#8220;Who is that strange person talking to, cause it certainly isn\u2019t me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Complaints, about the horrific limitations of 160 characters<\/strong> \u2013 With space so tight, why are you wasting so much of it complaining?\u00a0 The good news is that if you manage to squeeze in at least one interesting thing, I might still follow you.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Other things I already know I don\u2019t like&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>TrueTwit validation<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I\u2019m a twit, so clearly you must be talking about yourself.\u00a0 I won\u2019t respond to these, ever.\u00a0 In fact, I immediately delete the email heralding how some self-proclaimed twit demands my undivided attention.\u00a0 In this, I\u2019m certain I\u2019m a lot more generous than most, who I suspect will unfollow instantly.\u00a0 However, my generosity established and cast aside, your name <em>will<\/em> stick in my mind\u2026 That\u2019s a <em>bad<\/em> thing, since I\u2019ll be extra critical of your first tweets, with an itchy unfollow finger waiting eagerly to dispatch you to virtual oblivion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DM\u2019s from follow bots<\/strong> \u2013 Very irritating, they almost compel me to hit unfollow.\u00a0 I don\u2019t mind actual DM\u2019s from real people composed directly to me, though I would much prefer they simply Tweeted their message.\u00a0 Twitter is an open forum, say what you think out loud, don\u2019t whisper it. (Yes, I know about private accounts, and have followed a few \u2013 but those days, hours, minutes, seconds, all five trillion of them,\u00a0are rapidly coming to an end.)\u00a0 Believe it or not, I received an autofollow DM trying to sell me fake watches (or \u201c<strong><em>replica watches &amp; jewelry<\/em><\/strong>\u201d, \u00a0as he termed it).\u00a0 Not surprised? \u00a0How about if I mentioned this garbage purveyor&#8217;s bio proudly proclaimed, \u201c<em><strong>Doing Life God&#8217;s Way!<\/strong><\/em>\u201d?\u00a0 Which god might that be? The god of <strong><em>Avarice<\/em><\/strong>, perhaps?\u00a0 Needless to say, it didn\u2019t take me long to click \u201cunfollow\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DMs<\/strong> \u2013 yep, I\u2019m already beginning to dislike these obnoxious little whispers, they are so overwhelmingly banal.\u00a0 Did I say I don\u2019t mind DMs?\u00a0 I\u2019ve changed my mind. \u00a0Perhaps the first Twitter add-on I\u2019ll look for will be something to eliminate them,\u00a0\u00a0then unfollow their sender.\u00a0 But that\u2019s just me being private and paranoid, in an open virtual world.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">{Update on DM&#8217;s}<\/span> &#8211; paranoia\u00a0proven true&#8230; On 10\/15\/12 my paranoia saved me from two DM transmitted scumware attacks.\u00a0 Links which attempted to redirect me to (1) a fake facebook site, and (2) a\u00a0fake twitter site named &#8220;twivvter dot com&#8221; (please don&#8217;t succumb to curiosity and visit it). Both did a fine job of acting like my internet\u00a0connection had been interupted, then attempted to trick me into revalidating \u2013 which would have given some worthless piece of human flesh control of my accounts.\u00a0 Please be very\u00a0careful, if it happened to me on the third or fourth day I actually started &#8220;using&#8221; Twitter, it is very likely to\u00a0happen to you. An example of the actual attack attempt email appears below, names obliterated to save innocents embarassment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cgayling.com\/malmaxa\/2012\/10\/thoughts-on-twitter-bios\/the-attack-email\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-751\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-751\" title=\"the attack email received as result of the DM\" src=\"https:\/\/cgayling.com\/malmaxa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/the-attack-email.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"458\" height=\"312\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Please don&#8217;t visit that compressed url, it&#8217;ll take you to this&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cgayling.com\/malmaxa\/2012\/10\/thoughts-on-twitter-bios\/the-attack-site\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-752\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-752\" title=\"the attack site\" src=\"https:\/\/cgayling.com\/malmaxa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/the-attack-site.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"491\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looks pretty real, doesn&#8217;t it? Oh, and a further warning &#8211; my Firefox is locked down pretty tight, it blocked a script before this site popped up. My recommendation? If you ever see this nasty, nasty copyright violating website, close down all browser sessions, and\u00a0scan your computer\u00a0for scumware &#8211; by the time you see the picture scripts may have compromised your browser.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">{A little slam here}<\/span> &#8211; as Twitter&#8217;s complaint submission form requires submission of the offending tweet&#8217;s hyperlink, they give us no way to report these attacks. As far as I can find, DMs don&#8217;t have hyperlinks &#8211; which means you can&#8217;t actually report them.\u00a0\u00a0(Recall my newbie status? I hope I&#8217;m wrong on this point, in which case I&#8217;ll be glad to fix this error.) It would be trival for Twitter to include a &#8220;Report Attack&#8221; button on the DM dialog, and equally trivial to scan submitted links for browser redirection attempts and immediately place a lock on the account of &#8220;offenders&#8221;.\u00a0 That would protect real people, since the sender\u00a0is quite likely to be unaware\u00a0they&#8217;ve been &#8220;hacked&#8221; &#8211; \u00a0in the case of the DMs I received, I&#8217;m convinced of that.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>And now, the things I secretly like in a Bio, though I\u2019ll never admit them to my wife\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>An interesting avatar<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Sure, they\u2019re needless eye candy.\u00a0 I like candy, what, you don\u2019t? {Don&#8217;t believe me? Look at the eye candy I created, <a title=\"Twitter, whofor art I?\" href=\"https:\/\/cgayling.com\/malmaxa\/2012\/10\/twitter-whofor-art-i\/\">embedded in this <\/a>&#8211; but be warned, keep it away from your eyeballs {not responsible to multiple perforations}.}<\/p>\n<p><strong>A feminine name<\/strong> \u2013 Opposites really do attract. \u00a0Since I\u2019m a man, my eye is drawn to feminine names much faster than it is to masculine ones.\u00a0 That is the plain, unadorned truth, and no \u2013 I have no idea how it manages, but trust me, it does.\u00a0 Obviously if this is real, {not the normal raving of my insane mind}, then feminine eyes should be drawn to masculine names {assuming a heterosexual preference}, I\u2019d love to hear what you think about this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Positive Tone<\/strong> \u2013 In every honest evaluation I\u2019ve made of my own character, no matter how much I feign optimism, I&#8217;m a skeptic.\u00a0 My root nature is negative, I\u2019m an aging man, long past his prime, recently past self-deceit, and ultimately reconciled that I&#8217;m not Positive.\u00a0 I\u2019m ashamed, (well of course I am, silly, I\u2019m a negative person).\u00a0 Once again, the opposites attract rule holds true \u2013 upbeat, positive biographies attract me far more than down in the dumps self-pity.\u00a0 I\u2019m really hoping some of that positivity will rub off on me (nah, that\u2019s an outright lie :)), though I do enjoy reading upbeat posts as much as downbeat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Victim<\/strong> \u2013 to my charms, and more importantly, the goods I\u2019m trying to purvey.\u00a0 What might those goods be?\u00a0 Well, perhaps \u201c<em>goods<\/em>\u201d isn&#8217;t the right choice of wording \u2013 indeed some might better term them \u201c<em>awfuls<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0They&#8217;re my words, of course \u2013 I\u2019m trying to gain an audience for my words\u2026 some of them are even in book form, and no I\u2019m not going to make this easy for you \u2013 you\u2019ll have to visit my website to learn more.\u00a0 {Wait a moment, why you\u2019re already here!
