{"id":3146,"date":"2013-09-17T09:06:56","date_gmt":"2013-09-17T14:06:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cgayling.com\/malmaxa\/?p=3146"},"modified":"2013-09-17T09:06:56","modified_gmt":"2013-09-17T14:06:56","slug":"alternity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cgayling.com\/malmaxa\/general\/alternity\/","title":{"rendered":"Alternity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before we begin let me acknowledge that \u201cAlternity\u201d isn\u2019t actually a word.\u00a0 Prompted by recent conversation on my <a title=\"yes, this is me, in another place, and possibly even another time...\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CGAyling\">Twitter<\/a> timeline about truth, I made it up this morning.<\/p>\n<p>So, what is my intended use for the word?<\/p>\n<p>Truth is not an absolute.\u00a0 Indeed does truth even exist at all?\u00a0 Since I personally see it everywhere I look, I am inclined to believe it does.\u00a0 However, truth is a very human thing.\u00a0 And like humans, who are all unique, truth varies according to the person who perceives it.<\/p>\n<p>In explanation, here is one of the tweets in question.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">My truths, in my words,<br \/>your truths may vary,<br \/>and that&#39;s OK,<br \/>for the only truth I&#39;ve learned of truth,<br \/>is that truth<br \/>is never absolute.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; C.G.Ayling (@CGAyling) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CGAyling\/status\/379238180207087616?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 15, 2013<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It reads, \u201c<em>My truths, in my words, your truths may vary, and that&#8217;s OK, for the only truth I&#8217;ve learned of truth, is that truth is never absolute.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So how does one capture their intent when existing words simply are inadequate to succinctly convey the concept?\u00a0 Perhaps by doing what has been done since time immemorial, and combining other words involved in the concept into a new word. Thus, \u201c<strong><em>Alternity<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The root words involved include the following, along with my interpretation of each {How sad is it when we must interpret our own language? Not sad at all, for therein lies great pleasure.}<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alternative<\/strong>. Not the same as yours, not explicitly better or worse \u2013 merely different.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eternity<\/strong>. If truth is absolute, it must exist forever. Yet I believe there are no absolutes, so truth cannot exist for eternity. A nice conundrum {If you follow me on Twitter you\u2019ll know I am particularly fond of those.}<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diversity<\/strong>.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t actually the word I really want, but it comes closest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reality<\/strong>.\u00a0 To me, my view of truth seems real. You might well consider my views as either outright lies, or only partially true. Another tweet captures my convictions on the sentiment of partial truths.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A partial truth,<br \/>is also a partial lie.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; C.G.Ayling (@CGAyling) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CGAyling\/status\/373849242864873472?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 31, 2013<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It reads, \u201c<em>A partial truth, is also a partial lie<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My intent with that tweet was to highlight another conundrum, namely that the commonly held view of truth being absolute is itself an absolute lie {and from someone who doesn&#8217;t believe in absolutes&#8230; well, I&#8217;m sure you get the idea.}<\/p>\n<p>There are other words I\u2019d like to incorporate into <strong><em>alternity<\/em><\/strong>, unfortunately they don\u2019t exist, except within my thoughts {Like you, within my mind I am free and unfettered by constraints imposed by written and spoken language.}\u00a0 Like alternity, those insubstantial thoughts aren\u2019t really words at all, just a substantial belief that without diversity we are doomed.\u00a0 With that I\u2019ll leave you with the tweet that inspired this post.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Embrace alternity.<\/p>\n<p>{Since sometimes the words we have simply won&#39;t do,<br \/>I made up one that does.}<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; C.G.Ayling (@CGAyling) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CGAyling\/status\/379950149931257856?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 17, 2013<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It reads, &#8220;<em>Embrace alternity. {Since sometimes the words we have simply won&#8217;t do, I made up one that does.}<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Overall, I\u2019m rather pleased with the result \u2013 \u201calternity\u201d, a word that combines multiple very complex concepts into something so intuitive virtually anyone can understand it.\u00a0 Naturally you\u2019re entirely free to disagree with any or all of this, indeed I encourage you to do so.
